It took a while for me to admit that to myself, but there it is. Since I started this a few years ago a number of other awesome blogs and online resources have been created. I added a few to the list of links on the right side of the page. I'm working on a Website where I will continue to write about Latinos in kid lit in addition to other topics dear to myAll Brown All Aroundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12107902955767976325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638409873122167564.post-76924242874203686512015-03-07T09:15:00.001-06:002015-03-07T09:15:20.310-06:00Giveaway Winner!Congratulations to Katie Scherrer who won the copy of Pig Park I was giving away. I blame it on being in hibernation mode. In case you get your news strictly from this blog (dude, what's wrong with you), the 2015 winners of the Pura Belpré Award were announced on February 2 in Chicago at the Youth Media Awards. If you weren't able to attend and want to live the excitement of the ceremony, you can watch the webcast. This is pretty sweet. The cool kids over at We Need Diverse Books are running a fundraising campaign on indiegogo. They are planning to use the money raised to fund a variety of initiatives focused on providing kids of all ages greater access to diverse books. The planned projects include developing educational kits, bringing diverse authors to schools and starting a kidlit diversity festival. I confess. I'm a glutton. This book had me at the cover. That image of a delicious marranito? I can imagine the moist cake-like center, the smell of molasses. I love this cover. I want to eat this cover.
Between those yummy covers is an equally delicious book. Pig Park (Cinco Puntos Press, 2014) is Claudia Guadalupe Martinez's second novel following her 2011 debut, The All Brown All Aroundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12107902955767976325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638409873122167564.post-57066536362862998742014-08-14T14:14:00.001-05:002014-08-17T11:04:24.195-05:00Thanks for Playing!

Oh lookee! There's the front of the program I neglected to post an image of last time around. Isn't that a beautiful portrait of la Señora Belpré created by Yuyi Morales? I'm so embarrassed. Posting about an event a month later is a total social media faux pas, I'm sure. By now the ALA Annual Conference and the 2014 Pura Belpré Celebración are but shiny little memories tucked away in my nostalgic heart. They say it's better late than never, right? Is that true? It's still summer though. I have that going for me.

I compiled the information below for a guest lecture I'm doing in a YA literature and resources class. This is obviously not an all-inclusive list of resources. I listed some of the articles / news stories that have come out recently that seem to have fueled the momentum in the movement for greater diversity in books for children and young adults. Check it out over on Facebook! Why do you think we need more diverse books?
#WeNeedDiverseBooks because no one should be half way through college before they recognize their lives and experiences in a book. Also, because more diverse books means less copies of The Help to diversify your collection. Um, exactly All Brown All Aroundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12107902955767976325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638409873122167564.post-1040277190434981902014-02-07T15:50:00.002-06:002014-02-07T16:57:22.851-06:00Post script to yesterday's entryRoger Sutton pointed out that several African-American men have won Caldecott honors. I unintentionally neglected to include these in my round-up of non-white authors and illustrators who have been awarded Caldecott or Newbery honors.

I don't know if that's the best title for this entry, but I like it. Howard Zinn said you can't be neutral on a moving train. I'm thinking about neutrality and award committees. I'll take credit for the Caldecott pun that exists in there somewhere (you know, train, Locomotive). Anyway, this past week the Horn Book Magazine posted a short online article about the Caldecott results, All Brown All Aroundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12107902955767976325noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638409873122167564.post-69770404955155777662014-02-03T12:36:00.002-06:002014-02-06T20:33:54.555-06:00Pura Belpré Award Winners!

Many of you will recognize the title as the question asked by a five-year-old Black child at the beginning of Nancy Larrick's 1965 article, “The All-White World of Children’s Books.” While Larrick addressed other populations, she wrote her article primarily about the state of publishing for Black children. The term “Hispanic” hadn’t come on the scene yet, much less the word “Latino.”1 In All Brown All Aroundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12107902955767976325noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4638409873122167564.post-74939908428539755762013-07-24T13:23:00.000-05:002013-07-24T13:37:32.091-05:00Valuing ReadingIn 1986, Walter Dean Myers wrote a piece for The New York Times titled "I Actually Thought We Would Revolutionize the Industry." In the article, Myers wrote about his experiences as a child reader seeing only negative images of Blacks in children's books and being fully aware of the power those images had on readers of all races in influencing how they viewed African Americans. I had so much to write about Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. Really! Just take a look at my copy that is not only long overdue (eep!) but is covered in those little sticky tabs and dog-eared where I didn't have sticky tabs handy. Unfortunately, it's taken me some time to get around to writing this entry so a lot of what I wanted to say has slipped my mind. That happens to me sometimes. Over the past two years, I have been working toward a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) at the University of Illinois' Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS). In an interview with NPR, Malin Alegria described her new teen series, Border Town, as being like Sweet Valley High, "but with brown kids." Depending on your view of Sweet Valley High and other books in that particular genre, one might be a little hesitant to get excited. Formulaic plots? Cheesy writing? Kinda lame high school drama? One dimensional characters? Ehhh. Do we really need All Brown All Aroundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12107902955767976325noreply@blogger.com3
